Marimbas are xylophone-like instruments made with wooden keys. They are often made with an African hardwood called padauk. Other woods such as mahogany, wenge, even yew or cedar are also sometimes used. There are four different ranges of marimba voices - soprano, tenor, baritone and bass – and each of these voices is assigned its own specific and special part and rhythm. When played together, the parts combine to form interlocking harmonies, melodies, and rhythms. A typical large marimba orchestra will use three sopranos, two tenors, and one each of the bass and baritone marimbas. Gourd shakers (hoshos) are usually played as well to centre the ensemble and keep them in time This unique and participatory music appeals to people of all ages and from all places. The music is joyful, exciting, irresistible and easy to learn. In just one week, participants are surprised and satisfied to find they are able to learn and perform an entire song as an ensemble.
The mbira, often referred to as the "thumb piano," is a traditional African instrument with a rich history dating back over a thousand years. Originating from the Shona people of Zimbabwe, the mbira holds profound cultural and spiritual significance, serving as both a musical instrument and a medium for storytelling, ritual, and communication with ancestors.
The ngoma drum is one of Africa’s most iconic and versatile percussion instruments, deeply rooted in the traditions and cultures of various African communities. The term "ngoma" comes from the Bantu languages, where it broadly translates to "drum" or "dance," reflecting its dual role as both a musical instrument and a central part of African cultural expression.
